Introduction
Course Details
Our nationally accredited Confined Space Course is, like much in our safety training stable, practical. However, contextualised learning starts with an appreciation of risks and your workplace dynamics in the classroom and with group discussions. As such, Confined Space Training involves both theoretical training combined with simulated environments at either Harness’s custom built (or mobile) training centres with smoke and other stress factors to test behavioural responses. With our many years of health and safety experience stemming from high risk industries – such as the oil and gas industry, our processes are honed to meet the exacting needs of high risk and regulated industry sectors.
This course covers three units of competency which are taught during the training day in an integrated and seamless way
- Entering and working in confined spaces – a thorough understanding of confined spaces from recognition to protection to isolating and equipment for working in a confined space. Permits and risk controls for confined spaces through to actually entering and undertaking activities in simulated environments
- How to test an atmosphere for breathability and any toxic gases or hazardous materials. This is essential risk control before you access a confined space without Breathing Apparatus
- The third pillar of this training day is around working with an issued permit – confined spaces have regulatory and workplace requirements which include scope of activity, location, managing hazards through to communications and more.
If you wish to know the detailed content, each unit of competency’s key topics are outlined below.
Confined Space Entry training includes the following learning topics
- Explanation of What is a Confined Space, Confined Space Hazards, Unsafe Oxygen Levels and Atmospheric Hazards. Inc Effect of Irrespirable Atmospheres on the Respiratory System.
- Work Safely and Health and Safety Rules including an understanding of Technical and Safety Information including Your Work Details, Work Method Statements, Permits, safety and emergency Response Planning
- How to Isolate the Confined Space and select / Inspect Equipment
- Guidelines and Tallies, Communication Equipment, Lifting and Lowering Devices, Fire Fighting Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Respiratory and Atmospheric Testing, Monitoring and Rescue equipment
- Environmental protection requirements
- Practical training in how to Gain Access to the Confined Space, applying the testing and equipment learnings above Atmospheric Test Results, hazard checks before Entering the space.
- Confirming the confined space is ready for Entry including hazard checks
- Role of the Entry control officer..
- Actual Entry of the confined space including Maintaining Communication with Stand-By Person..
- Actually working in the confined space and managing New Hazards
- Exiting and returning the confined space to Service including inspection, cleaning, maintenance and completing relevant documentation and reporting of issues.
The Gas Test Atmospheres Training component is a key Control Measure in relation to Confined Space Entry. You will learn about:
- Gas testing safety information, organisational procedures and policies
- Determine atmosphere to be tested
- Select and calibrate gas test equipment
- Testing and monitoring equipment including radiation detectors, sampling tubes and pumps, oxygen level metres, carbon monoxide detectors, combustible gas detectors,
- calibrate equipment, perform function tests and determine the testing regime
- Hazards including learning about hazardous materials and toxic substances with relevant causes and thus know about relevant control measures eg personal protective equipment
- Testing the atmosphere including sampling and understanding liquids in a confined space
- Learn how to interpret and report atmospheric gas tester readings including contaminant units of measurement, exposure standards, acute and chronic effects of toxic substances reporting and recommendations
- Understand and conduct ongoing monitoring along with taking action if required
- Maintaining gas testing equipment; clean, inspect, fault finding and replacement through to storage and records
Working in Accordance with an Issued Permit is the third part of this training course:
- Applying for a permit including scope, location, needed information and submission of permit application
- Check work complies with permit
- Hazard identification, control management and checking preparations have been completed.
- Receive the permit and prepare safe working conditions including incident response procedures.
- Monitor conditions and hazards including personal protective equipment and inspect work area
- Comply with permit requirements including use of a safety observer & hazard reduction and control measures, display, scope, location and timeframes
- Seek variations to permit including authorised extensions.
- provide status report and re-validation or re-issue of permits through to checking work conducted against the permit
- Apply housekeeping requirements, removing lockout and isolation devices
- Understanding the key communications and documentation
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate which indicates the Statement of Attainments as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is a nationally recognised certification. The Statement is issued by us, Harness Energy (RTO 40521).
The Confined Space ‘Statement of Attainment’ is for the Nationally Accredited Units of Competency –
- RIIWHS202E – Enter And Work In Confined Space
- MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
- MSMPER200 – work in accordance with an issued permit
The certificate is usually needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements and enables the holder to operate BA Equipment.
Important Notes: RIIWHS202E supersedes & equivalent to RIIWHS202D. MSMWHS217 Supersedes and is equivalent to MSAPMOHS217A. MSMPER200 Supersedes and equivalent to MSAPMPER200C

Frequently Asked Questions
Confined spaces are areas which are usually not intended for human occupancy, have limited access or exit points and is large enough to actually access (thereby being a place where you can also get trapped). You’ll find confined spaces everywhere; vats, tanks, pits, pipes, ducts, flues, chimneys, silos, pressure vessels, underground sewers, wet or dry wells, shafts, shipboard spaces, void spaces or other similar enclosed or partially enclosed structures. It is possible that if you are working in confined spaces you may not recognise the space as a confined space and risk missing appropriate precautions – making this training all the more valuable.
Risks commonly found in these spaces include toxic atmospheric hazards and contaminants, flammable atmospheric hazards, engulfment and flooding. heat and lack of oxygen as well as access restrictions. The biggest risk is that hazards are either not seen or not visible.
The rules for confined space training can vary by industry and organisation. It is however, seen as a key element of training for you if working in medium to high risk industries and, through your work, may access or work within confined space environments.
This training is important for safety because accessing environments which are not meant for human occupancy can present real risks resulting in workers losing consciousness, injury or death from contaminants in the air such as oxygen deficiency, a fire or explosion that kills or seriously injures or crushing or suffocation from something like grain, sand, flour or fertiliser if you fall into it. The risks can also impact others on site as workers may enter a space to help rescue someone and not be aware of the risks.
Australian Standards for working in confined spaces indicate that workers and their supervisors must have the skills and knowledge to understand the hazards associated with working in the confined space, the contents of any confined space entry permit, and the control measures implemented for their protection. Our training helps address this safety standard need. We also include working with an issued work permit because confined space entry permit must be issued for each time you enter into a confined space. It is one of the reasons we provide you this permit training. A confined space entry permit provides a formal check to ensure all elements of a safe system of work are in place before you or others are allowed to enter the confined space.
At Harness, we recommend you undertake this training – in full – every two years. The skills and hazards that surround confined spaces for many industries are such that you may also be required to do this training more frequently. We encourage everyone to not take short cuts financially or in terms of your training time when considering refresher training because we value everyone’s safety and that you should always be as well trained as possible so you get to go home to your family. Given this value plus the fact that this is a practical course is why we don’t do a short cut version of this training – it is one way we can contribute to risk minimisation as part of our training philosophy.
“Re-training or refresher training should be provided as appropriate for a particular workplace. The frequency of this training should depend on how often workers are required to carry out tasks associated with entering or working in confined spaces. Records of all training provided to workers in relation to confined space work must be kept for 2 years” (Note: This information was reproduced from the Australian standards Confined Spaces Code of Practice Feb 2016. The Confined spaces Code of Practice is an approved code of practice under section 274 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (the WHS Act). It applies to anyone who is a duty holder in this area. It covers an explanation of areas that must be, are required or is mandatory from a legal perspective. It also includes codes which are recommended.
