Looking to break into the oil and gas industry as a leasehand?

It’s a physically demanding, fast-paced role that’s perfect for those with grit, stamina, and the right mindset. But more than just muscle, great leasehands bring reliability, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety.

Whether you’re new to the field or aiming to stand out, here’s what we look for in a top-tier candidate.

💪

Physical and Practical Readiness

  • Fitness and Endurance: The role is extremely physical. Leasehands must lift, carry, climb, and work long hours in all weather conditions.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Even a basic knowledge of tools and machinery is an asset, and being able to assist with maintenance or troubleshooting makes you stand out.
  • Adaptability: Leasehands must support all areas—cleaning, maintenance, unloading deliveries, fuelling equipment, etc.

🦺

Safety, Medical Readiness, and Compliance

  • Injury and Medical History Disclosure: We need to know about any prior injuries or medical conditions. Full transparency is critical for your safety and the team’s.
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing: All leasehands must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Ongoing or random testing may occur on site.
  • Dry Camp Policy: Camps are strictly dry for the entire swing. This means no alcohol for three weeks straight while on-site.
  • PPE and Hazard Awareness: Understanding of and strict adherence to safety procedures, including wearing PPE, hazard ID, and participating in JHAs and toolbox talks.

🤝

Attitude, Work Ethic & Team Dynamics

  • Reliability: Show up early, be ready to go, and follow through with instructions the first time.
  • Coachability: Good leasehands ask questions when they’re unsure, take feedback well, and constantly seek to improve.
  • Team Spirit: A positive, humble attitude helps the whole crew—especially when tasks are hard, repetitive, or unpleasant.

📚

Growth Mindset & Career Progression

  • Eager to Learn: Great leasehands pay attention to how floorhands, motorhands, and drillers operate—learning everything they can.
  • Safety Certifications: Ensure all required tickets and licenses are up to date (e.g. first aid, confined space, working at heights).
  • Initiative: Taking responsibility for your learning and showing potential to move up is always noticed.

🧼

Housekeeping & Attention to Detail

  • Cleanliness Matters: A leasehand’s pride is often visible in how clean and organised the site is.
  • Watchfulness: Spotting potential hazards or equipment wear early is part of being proactive and safety-focused.

Being a great leasehand is about more than just hard work—it’s about showing up prepared, staying sharp on safety, and being a reliable team player every day. The best candidates are physically fit, coachable, compliant with all site requirements, and committed to continuous improvement. If you’ve got the right attitude and are ready to learn, this could be the first step in a long and rewarding career.
