Introduction
Fire Safety Training (MSMWHS212)
If you’re working in a medium or high-risk work environment, understanding the fundamentals of fire safety is a must. To protect your workers and your business, having the knowledge required to handle workplace emergencies is essential. Our fire safety training provides the practical skills to respond effectively during the early stages of a blaze. Through our first response fire safety training, participants gain hands-on experience in using a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, and hose reel to manage small emergencies before they escalate into major fire emergencies.
At Harness Energy, we offer first-response fire safety training that applies to operators who are required to respond to fires in the workplace (other than evacuating to the assembly point). It covers the first response to fire and does not include aggressive firefighting. Typically, this course would be undertaken to improve your fire awareness and emergency preparedness.
During this first-response fire training course, participants will learn how to assess and recognise the different types of fires and appropriate ways to respond. This includes when to get help, what equipment to use, and how to minimise the impact of a fire incident. Beyond basic compliance, our training empowers employees to act with confidence in high-pressure situations.

Training Prerequisites
The course packs a lot into one session, including topics such as evacuation, control measures, selecting and using the appropriate extinguishing agent, defensive fire-fighting tactics and techniques, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
The curriculum is designed to prepare personnel for the risks associated with potential facility emergency situations. By simulating real-life scenarios, we help emergency personnel and emergency responders develop the communication skills and knowledge to monitor facility emergency procedures.
Our training provides the knowledge needed to identify different types of fire and apply the correct safety procedures. You will learn to use fire protection equipment, understand facility emergency prevention procedures, and communicate with emergency services. Upon successful completion, you will be prepared to assist in facility emergencies and protect both personnel and business assets.
This course covers the following aspects:
- How to recognise and assess fire situations, including the identification of different types of fires and fuels.
- The range of penalties for non-compliance as applied under the WHS legislation.
- How to determine appropriate actions according to procedures, including:
- Evacuate (self/others)
- Seek assistance as appropriate
- Apply control measures
- Select and use a range of first-response fire-fighting safety equipment (such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, or fire hose reel)
- Select and use appropriate fire-extinguishing agent
- Apply defensive fire-fighting tactics and techniques
- Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Minimise the effect of a fire incident
- Communicate clearly and unambiguously with a range of personnel on fire emergency conditions, related problems and safety and emergency procedures.
The content of the course was developed with consideration of Sections 8 and 9 of the National Standard for the Control of Major Hazard Facilities [NOHSC:1014 (2002)] and the National Code of Practice for the Control of Major Hazard Facilities [NOHSC:2016 (1996)].
Following the successful completion of this course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This nationally recognised fire safety certificate is issued by Harness Energy (RTO 40521).

Course Prerequisites
There are no formal regulatory prerequisites to enrol in this course. However, because this training involves live fire simulations and the physical handling of pressurised equipment, participants must meet several functional safety requirements to successfully complete the practical assessments:
- Physical Adequacy: You must possess a basic level of physical agility and strength to safely lift, carry, and operate heavy fire extinguishers and hose reels.
- Mandatory Fire-Safe PPE: To protect against radiant heat during live fire drills, you must bring and wear:
- Natural Fibre Clothing: Long-sleeved shirt and long pants made of 100% cotton (e.g., standard hi-vis workwear). Synthetics or synthetic blends are strictly forbidden as they present a melting hazard.
- Safety Footwear: Fully enclosed leather shoes or steel-cap work boots.

Warden training specifically addresses facility emergency procedures and the responsibilities of a fire warden during a full evacuation.
