Introduction
Telehandler Training is another of your broadly relevant plant and equipment tickets to get trained! The telehandler training course is suitable for you if you need to use non-slewing telescopic materials handler operations (under 3 tonnes capacity) using a work platform attachment (<11mtr), forks, earth moving buckets or a job & hook attachment for a variety of jobs, including lifting, scooping, stacking, and carrying materials.
A telehandler operator is responsible for operating a telehandler forklift, and the purpose of these telehandler courses is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to lift heavy loads over long distances and heights. The successful completion of the Operate Telescopic Materials Handler course will allow participants to operate versatile machinery across various industry sectors that require operational roles.
Telehandlers are known by a range of names, including variable reach trucks, mobile cranes, mobile lifting plants, telescopic boom lifts, multi-purpose tool carriers, multi-purpose handlers and multi-purpose cranes. This versatile machinery is required across a multitude of industry sectors where you need to conduct housekeeping activities that require you to scoop, stack, lift, carry, transport, place materials, or load weight.
Harness Energy provides outstanding facilities to offer telehandler training in Gladstone, and Toowoomba. This unit is delivered by experienced trainers and provides practical assessment and theory that exceeds the certification requirements.

Unit Of Competency
RIIHAN309F - Conduct Telescopic Materials Handler Operations
Training Prerequisites
A telescopic handler (or telehandler) is a versatile machine that can be used for material handling and carrying materials. While a variety of attachments are available that can be fitted using a coupling system for the varied sizes and models of telehandlers, the characteristics, capabilities and limitations are generally consistent.
This telehandler course (Gladstone, and Toowoomba) is based around these control measures and common elements to ensure you have the skills required to apply them on-site.
During this Telehandler Ticket Training you will learn about key theoretical and practical topics consistent across the various types of telehandler plant, including the following:
- Plan and prepare for telescopic materials handler operations
- Conduct telescopic handler pre-operational checks
- Operate telescopic materials handler
- Attach, secure, lift, carry and place materials
- Select, remove and fit attachments
- Relocate the telescopic materials
- Carry out machine operator maintenance
- Conduct housekeeping activities
On the successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate that indicates the Statement of Attainments as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is a nationally recognised certification. The Statement is issued by us, Harness Energy (RTO 40521).
The Telehandler Ticket ‘Statement of attainment’ is for the Nationally Accredited Units of Competency:
- RIIHAN309F – Conduct Telescopic Materials Handler Operations
The Certificate is usually needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements. You do not need to apply for a High Risk Work Licence for these EWP types.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, telehandler operators require specialised training to operate heavy telehandler machinery on construction sites. This is to ensure safety and efficiency on the job site. These machines can handle a variety of tasks, such as lifting, moving, and placing materials. Still, their operation involves understanding complex controls, attachments, lifting capacity, safe working load, and safety regulations. Without proper training, the risk of accidents and equipment damage significantly increases.
These telehandler courses are designed to equip telehandler operators with the essential skills and knowledge, ensuring they can handle the machinery confidently and safely with the appropriate licensing.
No, the certification requirements for telehandler licensing differs depending on the capacity and attachments. The RIIHAN309F telehandler course (Gladstone, and Toowoomba) is the primary first course for becoming a Telehandler Operator.
If the type of telehandler means it will operate for e.g. over 11 mtrs, then the EWP licence will be required. Similarly, a crane may have telescopic attachments and thus may also mean you need a High-Risk Work Licence for those different plant, including CN Class Non-Slewing mobile Crane.
No, but If you do add a platform that then qualifies it within the EWP Licence Over 11 mtrs, then you will fall within the need for a HRWL as per this list:
- Operation of cranes and hoists
- Using a crane job lifting attachment
- Dogging and rigging work
- Driving a forklift truck
- Erecting or dismantling scaffolding
- Operation of boilers or other pressure equipment
- Operation of concrete placing booms
- Operation of an elevated work platform >11mtr
- Operation of a reach stacker.
