Frequently Asked Questions
Safe and secure packing and transporting of cargo to minimise accidents before, during and after transportation is vital as part of our duty of care towards people, the environment and equipment. Spillage, contamination and injury are just a few of the reasons to undertake this training. It may seem logical as to why – but the skill involved in securing cargo cannot be underestimated. If you are involved in any performing or supervising those who do the packing, loading and even unloading for transportation, then it is part of the essential training.
Load restraint is the process of securing cargo, in or on a vehicle or pallet, to prevent it from moving during transport. If a load moves during transport it can cause accidents and endanger life, so prevention is not only vital but legally required in the goods transport and other industries where cargo is being transported.
Common equipment for restraining loads includes strapping, netting, lashing plus more methods of securing items to ensure they remain safely in place and do not cause danger to other road users.
The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), is the primary go-to for load restraint requirements. The National Transport Commission’s Load Restraint Guide provides a substantial amount of detail. The guide provides comprehensive information on how to safely and legally secure a load to a vehicle
Rules for Load Restraint training can vary by industry, legal requirements and organisation. However, All drivers and operators of heavy vehicles must successfully complete the TLID0015 – Load and unload goods/cargo. TLIA1001 – Secure Cargo training course units of competency in order to legally transport goods on public roads.
In Australia, all vehicles must comply with the relevant load restraint standards and regulations. Failure to comply can result in significant fines.
