Training Prerequisites
We deliver our Trailer Driving & Towing Courses with our own tow vehicle and equipment comprising both dual axle and single axle trailers. We provide plenty of hands-on practice in various settings to ensure you understand every aspect of safe towing, including:
- Carry out a trailer safety inspection and check all requirements.
- Connect a trailer to a vehicle (coupling and uncoupling process).
- Manoeuvre a trailer with reversing and parking techniques.
- Safely disconnect a trailer from a vehicle.
In our half-day course, we teach you the following:
- Work health and safety (WHS) and occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements relating to driving and manoeuvring trailers, including manually manoeuvring trailers.
- Key features of relevant state and territory regulations relating to trailers, including those relating to:
- Couplings and uncoupling techniques
- Safe towing weights
- Towing speeds
- Braking
- Application, purpose and operation of trailers, including:
- Pivot and non-pivot trailers
- Definition of aggregate trailer mass and gross trailer mass
- Trailer coupling systems, including:
- Tow ball
- Lunette ring
- Weight distributing hitch
- Inspection procedures for trailers, including:
- Coupling system
- Electrical system
- Braking system
- Wheel assembly and bearings
- Suspension system
- Loading procedures for trailers, including:
- Centre of mass location
- Tongue weight
- Methods for determining maximum towing capacity of vehicle
- Methods for determining load capacity of towbar
- Driving and manoeuvring techniques, including:
- Effects of trailer on overall turning circle
- Effects of trailer on acceleration, steering and braking
- Methods of avoiding and controlling vehicle and trailer away
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate which indicates the Statement of Attainment as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is a nationally recognised certification. The Statement is issued by Harness Energy (RTO 40521).
The Trailer Towing Course ‘Statement of Attainment’ is for the nationally-accredited Units of Competency:
- AURTGA001 Drive and Manoeuvre Trailers
If conducting this training for work purposes, the certificate will usually be needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements.
Course Prerequisites
You must have a valid driver’s licence (or P licence). All transport / trailer equipment is provided. Our towing courses require you to wear suitable PPE, bring water, sunscreen and outdoor protection. Please review the Important Course Requirements (relevant to ALL courses).
