About the Opportunity

Shell’s QGC business operates in the traditional Country of many Aboriginal groups. We are committed to increasing employment opportunities for those groups in its business. The 2021 intake is focussed on Iman Traditional Owners and will comprise four Iman Wellsite Support Operators. The Iman Wellsite Support Operators will initially be employed on a two-year contract. During these two years, they will undertake formal and on-the-job training while receiving guidance and support with the prospect of ongoing employment once they complete their training.

About the role

The role of the Wellsite Support Operators is to operate the equipment essential to getting gas out of the ground safely, efficiently and effectively. They ensure that all wells are in good condition and producing to their full potential. Wellsite Support Operators are a vital part of operations as they enable successful production of gas to supply the compression plant and pipeline. Some of the key responsibilities of this role are to:

  • Handle gas and equipment safely, in line with strict rules.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture.
  • Make decisions to ensure that wells run safely and efficiently.
  • Quickly and accurately collate and monitor information from wells and gathering systems.
  • Maintain company assets such as wells & gathering infrastructure.
  • Develop an understanding of relevant rules and regulations.
  • Support a culture of speaking up when something goes wrong, to enable us to learn and improve the way we work.
  • Work on a ‘15 days on / 13 days off’ roster.
  • Act in line with our core values of honesty, integrity and respect.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking passionate Indigenous Australians from the Iman Traditional Owner Group for a fantastic career opportunity in the natural gas sector.

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of Australian Indigenous descent; from the Iman Traditional Owner group.
  • Have a valid open C class driver’s licence and safe driving behaviours.
  • Have completed at least Year 10 in High School.
  • Live in or be willing to relocate to the Western Downs region if offered a place.
  • Work on a ‘15 days on / 13 days off’ roster.
  • Have a strong commitment to health, safety and the environment.
  • Have some experience relevant to this role. (for example a role where you needed a strong safety focus.)
  • Have an interest in developing a long-term career in the natural gas sector.
  • Be able to pass a drug & alcohol and fit to work test.

To be eligible for consideration, you must meet the criteria listed above. The below criteria are desirable but not a must-have for successful candidates:

  • Good motivation and initiative.
  • Able to work in challenging and changing environments.
  • Ability to identify and manage risks.
  • Experience operating gas fired engines, hydraulic motors and pumps.
  • Certificate III in Process Plant Operations.
  • Good at using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience using Internet-based software systems.

Financial support will be provided for Iman Traditional Owners to relocate to the Western Downs. The Western Downs includes the townships of Taroom, Wandoan, Miles, Dalby, Chinchilla, Tara, Jandowae and surrounding areas.

We are looking for passionate Indigenous Australians from the Iman Traditional Owner group who are passionate about building a career in the natural gas sector. We’re looking for people who:

  • Are keen to learn
  • Can adapt to change
  • Are team players with good communication skills
  • Have a mature attitude to work. 
  • Have some relevant work experience, for example, a role where you had to have a strong safety focus. 

You must be able to verify your Iman heritage through the Wardingarri Aboriginal Corporation.

The recruitment and selection process can take up to three months, with recruitment commencing on 7th of June. Candidates will be required to participate in each stage of the selection process to be considered for a position in the program.

The Harness assessment centres are designed to be a comfortable, fun, and safety focussed group interview experience with other candidates, where you will be assessed on your teamwork, communication skills, and practical ability.

If you are successful, you will be offered full-time ongoing employment with Shell QGC and your employment contract and relevant onboarding documentation required to commence your employment with Shell QGC will be provided to you.

Candidates will be kept updated as to their progress in each stage of the recruitment process either by phone and/or email.

Hours of work are long shifts, up to 10 hour shifts daily that start at  6am . The Wellsite Support Operator  consists of 15 days on and 13 days off back-to-back set roster. Additional overtime may be required and will be remunerated accordingly. 

There is an expectation that you will work and live within the Western Downs for this opportunity. Relocation  support can be provided for individuals on a case-by-case basis. This will need to be discussed with the Harness recruitment officer during the recruitment process and relocation arrangements will be discussed with successful candidates.

Yes, full PPE and uniform will be provided to successful candidates for the program.

Driving is a large portion of this role to visit and access remote sites. It is a requirement of this role to have a valid open driver’s licence. It is a requirement of all positions that you have reliable transport to and from work.
