Reconciliation Week 2024 – RAP. Now More Than Ever
Did you know 27 May – 3rd June is the nationally recognised Reconciliation Week. An opportunity to learn about our shared history, cultures, and achievements – and to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The 2024 theme is a reminder that for all of us, no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. It is something we can all individually contribute to. It provides a central theme for Harness through our Reconciliation Committee who were able to present the progress being made to help us – both as an organisation and as individuals within the organisation – to broaden our knowledge, learn and take actions.
Through the generous involvement of Rhan Hooper, Didgeridoos & Aboriginal Artifacts, we learnt more about both his own personal journey and the fact that it was not until he was in his 20’s did his cultural engagement really start to happen. He inspires us to take the time to listen and learn. We discussed, as part of the session, simple actions that individuals can take including: appropriatly involving local aboriginal community representatives, asking questions to educate ourselves about aspects of aboriginal culture and calling out behaviour that goes against upholding the rights of our First Nations People.
In addition to this education, our own reconciliation plan’s progress was communicated including the revealing of the commissioned artwork for Harness. Like much first nations people artwork, there is a story within the artwork. It includes a reflection on the origin and role of Harness in helping those we work with and support. Additionally, with key first nations staff within Harness, we are well positioned to continue to adopt, learn, support and develop our work towards our own contribution towards reconciliation. |
