Course Overview


Harness offers a one day Identify and Minimise Environmental Hazards course which covers all the skills and knowledge required to identify activities and/or materials that present an environmental threat and to take the appropriate action according to procedures. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • MSMENV172 - Identify and minimise environmental hazards
  • RIIRIS202E - Respond to site based spills

Learning Methods:

The mode of delivery for this course is face to face in a classroom environment as well as significant practical elements outside of the classroom. 

In the delivery of this course, our trainers focus on providing an individualised adult learning environment that considers the learner’s experience and employment history. 

Theory is presented in a supportive learner centered environment designed to provide functional theoretical knowledge that is directly applicable to real world tasks.

Learning materials provided include the Harness student handbook and participants will be advised in advance of attending the course if there are any materials to be provided by them.

The assessment for this course has been designed to assess the individual to the Australian Qualification Framework, relevant Training Package, Australian and Industry expectations, as well as Commonwealth and State Legislation. 

Course Content

Throughout the Harness course our trainers will cover off the below operations ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical elements. 

1. Identify environmental threats
  • Recognise the type and severity of environmental threat posed by the materials and processes used for own work 
  • Identify ways materials used may enter the environment 
  • Identify sensitive features of the local environment and their impact on work practice and procedures 
  • Recognise abnormal or unacceptable emission levels 
2. Identify workplace procedures and policies to minimise environmental threats 
  • Identify workplace policy for environmental protection
  • Identify environmental protection measures within standard operating procedures (SOPs) relevant to work
  • State contact procedures for personnel involved in environmental response teams
3. Follow procedures to minimise environmental threats 
  • Implement environmental protection measures in relevant procedures 
  • Report abnormal emissions/environmental issues to appropriate personnel 
  • Apply containment procedures in accordance with SOPs, where appropriate 
  • Implement waste management procedures and practices 
  • Follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
