Introduction
We deliver a one-day face-to-face Santos Work Permit Procedure & Module 49 — Gas Detection training program designed for personnel required to work within an issued permit at Santos operational sites. This nationally recognised training program combines Santos’s own Work Permit Procedure and Module 49 Gas Detection content with the practical skills and knowledge required to satisfy two nationally recognised units of competency — MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit and MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres.
The program is built around real Santos site requirements. Participants learn to plan and prepare for permit-controlled work, recognise hazards and apply appropriate risk controls, conduct gas testing and monitoring, and respond to changes in operational conditions during permit execution.
Delivered by experienced industry trainers, the course balances classroom learning with practical assessment to ensure participants leave with the skills and knowledge required to work under a Santos-issued permit.

Unit Of Competency
MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit, MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
Training Prerequisites
OPS.102 SWPP Permit Holder Induction, Santos Work Permit Procedure (SWPP) eLearning course
This program applies to all personnel who hold responsibility for working under an issued permit at Santos operational field sites. The training content blends Santos’s own Work Permit Procedure and Module 49 Gas Detection material with the additional underpinning knowledge and assessment evidence required to satisfy the two national units of competency.
The course is delivered in two integrated parts:
Part 1 — Santos Work Permit Procedure (MSMPER200)
Learners cover the full permit-to-work lifecycle as applied at Santos sites: identifying permit-controlled tasks, understanding permit types and limitations, interpreting permit conditions, conducting pre-work checks, responding to changed conditions during execution, and correctly closing out a permit. The Santos Work Permit Procedure content is delivered without alteration, with additional underpinning knowledge added at the end of the package to satisfy MSMPER200 performance evidence and assessment conditions.
Part 2 — Module 49 Gas Detection (MSMWHS217)
Learners gain the practical skills to safely conduct gas testing in workplace atmospheres: gas detector selection, pre-use checks and calibration, atmospheric testing in confined and open environments, interpreting readings against exposure standards, and recording results. The course covers both the Santos Module 49 content and the broader MSMWHS217 competency requirements.
Participants who successfully complete the assessment receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for MSMPER200 and MSMWHS217, plus the Santos Permit Holder competency card.
Course Prerequisites
Before attending the face-to-face training, all participants must:
- Complete the Santos Work Permit Procedure (SWPP) online eLearning course — approximately 45 minutes duration. Evidence of completion must be presented on the day of training.
- Hold or complete OPS.102 SWPP Permit Holder Induction.
- Participants must possess sufficient English language, literacy and communication skills to safely undertake training and assessment activities in accordance with workplace and assessment requirements
- Complete the pre-attendance enrolment form with valid USI and identification.
All candidates must complete an enrolment process which captures any additional support needs and adjustments required.

Frequently Asked Questions
MSMPER200 is the nationally recognised unit of competency “Work in accordance with an issued permit.” It covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake work under a permit issued by an authorised permit issuer, including understanding permit conditions, performing pre-work checks, and recognising when to stop work.
MSMWHS217 is the nationally recognised unit of competency “Gas test atmospheres.” It covers the skills and knowledge required to safely test workplace atmospheres for hazardous gases and oxygen levels using portable gas detection equipment.
Santos’s Work Permit Procedure and Module 49 Gas Detection are the standard for working under permit and gas testing across Santos operations. By combining Santos’s own content with the additional underpinning required for the national units, participants leave with both site-specific competency recognised by Santos and a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.
