Introduction
If you are currently or potentially working in or around confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres or high-risk work environments, this gas tester course covers necessary entry requirements. We provide a weekly hands-on half-day Gas Test Atmospheres course to cover the skills and knowledge you need to safely test an atmosphere for breathability. This course imparts the knowledge required to detect visible and invisible hazards and, using electronic test apparatus and equipment to interpret readings, to test the safety of a confined atmosphere prior to entry.
Hazardous or unpredictable work environments may expose responders to environmental risks, meaning atmosphere testing is an important safety requirement. The gas tester training is for those attending for the first time or as a gas tester refresher training. You will learn to carry out an atmosphere test to identify and then control hazards prior to entry using the latest equipment.
Gas Test Atmospheres training can also be achieved in combination with other training courses – See the Related Courses section on this page, where you will find links to related courses such as Confined Space Entry Training.

Introduction
Course Details
Our nationally accredited Gas Test Atmospheres Training Course is a hands-on course where you learn how to prepare for gas testing an atmosphere prior to entry, how to perform an atmosphere test and how to maintain gas test apparatus. This test gas competency covers the ability to operate gas test equipment, interpret readings, and determine the level of hazards. When you successfully complete this unit of competency, you will receive your Gas Test Ticket, which is a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Getting your gas test ticket (statement of attainment) indicates competency and is required for those involved in working in confined spaces. This competency gives participants the ability to recognise the need for SCBA, i.e. Self-contained Breathing Apparatus. Gas test atmospheres training is a core safety and WHS competence for those working in medium to high-risk industries and/or jobs.
The Harness Gas Test Atmospheres Training Course; MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres, is delivered in line with the Australian government training curriculum and includes:
Prepararation for Gas Testing
- Find out the type of gas/atmosphere to be tested
- Select and calibrate equipment in accordance with procedures
- Find out the gas testing regime/sampling pattern required
- Identify hazards from possible atmosphere contaminants, e.g. Oxygen deficiency or enrichment, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, methane and more
- Exposure limits: TWAs, STELs, IDLHs etc.
- Implement hazard control measures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Performing Gas Test
- Use gas testing equipment for working atmosphere test
- Interpret readings and take reports
- Follow atmospheric monitoring requirements on an ongoing basis as required
- Take required action if readings are unacceptable
- Communicate required actions to be taken to the appropriate personnel
Maintain Gas Test Equipment
- Clean and maintain gas testing equipment in accordance with procedures
- Inspect and fault-find gas monitoring equipment in accordance with procedures
- Return gas testing equipment to the required location and in required location
- Maintain records of gas detector tests and results in accordance with procedures
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate which indicates the Statement of Attainments as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is a nationally recognised certification. The Statement is issued by us, Harness Energy (RTO 40521).
The Gas Test ‘Statement of Attainment’ is for the Nationally Accredited Unit of Competency
- MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
The Certificate is usually needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements.
Course Prerequisites
No course prerequisites apply. All Gas Test related equipment is provided. Wear suitable PPE for confined spaces (closed in shoes). Please also review the general important information (relevant to ALL courses) contained in Important Course Requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
An atmospheric sample testing for toxicity, oxygen deficiency, and the presence of gases, including flammable gases and vapours, which could be present in a working atmosphere. Getting training for workplace atmosphere testing ensures you understand when and how to test an atmosphere prior to and during work activities and how to interpret and act on the results. This competency applies practical activities and theory to build familiarity with gas test equipment and processes.
Confined spaces are areas that are usually not intended for human occupancy. These high-risk workplace atmospheres are spaces that can be found in vats, tanks, pits, pipes, ducts, flues, chimneys, silos, pressure vessels, underground sewers, wet or dry wells, shafts, shipboard spaces, void spaces or other similar enclosed or partially enclosed structures.
It is common that if you are working in confined spaces, you may not recognise a space as a confined space and can thus fail to take appropriate precautions, risking accidents. This course will give participants the skills to navigate potentially dangerous workplace atmospheres. You will learn the skills to carry out gas testing in a specific area, using an electronic test apparatus to recognise air densities, common gasses, invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
The rules for Gas Test training can vary by industry and organisation. It is however, seen as a standard safety course of training for you if working in most medium to high risk industries and jobs, including emergency services and those who may potentially, through their work, access or work within confined space environments.
This training applies to those working independently or as part of a team in collaboration with other shift team members and a control room operator. This working atmosphere course is therefore important because some working environments and activities undertaken can present real risks in relation to air-borne contaminants of a toxic and/or invisible nature. Atmospheric changes can also occur when working in confined spaces, resulting in oxygen deficiency, or such as from an event, e.g. fire. The risks can impact you, your work colleagues and those trying to rescue someone who is not aware of the risks.
The Gas Test Atmospheres training course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely conduct gas testing in various working environments. Covering fundamental concepts such as identifying hazardous gases, understanding gas testing equipment (e.g. electronic test apparatus), and executing proper safety protocols, this comprehensive course ensures that you are well-prepared to monitor potentially hazardous atmospheres and navigate hazardous surfaces.
Additionally, you’ll receive practical training and learn how to interpret gas readings accurately and respond effectively to emergency situations, making you a crucial asset in maintaining workplace safety. Following the successful completion of the gas test atmospheres course, you should possess the knowledge required to operate electronic test apparatus equipment, interpret readings and test gas while also having the skills to recognise and mitigate both visible and invisible hazards.
A core code of practice is included within the Confined Spaces Code of Practice. The details of this are covered during the Gas Test Training Course. However, there are a number of other codes that are relevant due to the variety of industries where different hazards and risks apply, which you learn about during the training, such as The Work Health & Safety Act 2011. The WHS Act includes information on obligations.
Gas Test atmospheres have applications in aspects of hazardous chemicals, Silica dust, confined spaces work, welding, spray painting, abrasive blasting, dust hazard environments, stevedoring, electrical work, demolition, and heavy plant and machinery works. Read various codes here: Codes of practice | WorkSafe.qld.gov.au
Testing atmospheres is important when undertaking hot work of any type where heat is part of the working environment or generated because of the activity e.g. welding, grinding, etc. It is also important in activities that can cause an uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons, other flammable or toxic materials. Often gas testing is undertaken in confined spaces or closed environments where issues may be more contained.
