Our practical confined space entry refresher training is specifically aimed at updating and ensuring your currency in the specific Unit of Competency for RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in Confined Spaces.  As such the training runs over half a day and is focused on a review of confined spaces knowledge, a critical knowledge assessment and fundamental practical.

This refresher confined space training is for those who hold current valid units of competency for Confined Space Entry and are looking to refresh their knowledge. It is not intended to replace the full confined space entry training and associated training of Working within Issued Permits and Gas Test Atmosphere training. Important pre-requisites apply to this course – as detailed below. Our Confined Space Entry Refresher Course is based on the full Confined Space Training but focused on the specific confined space unit of competency only.  As such, Confined Space Refresher Training in a half day course involving both theoretical refresher, assessment and focused practical within the simulated environments at our custom built (or mobile) training centres.  While this is a refresher and thus shorter safety course, our experience in teaching together with the required pre-requisites help ensure you authentically refresh your key knowledge in the potentially risky environment of confined spaces. On successfully completing this training you then receive the Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in Confined Spaces.

This course is not suitable if you are unable to provide evidence of having signed on to a confined space related work risk assessment and work permit. This is required, along with a current (2 yrs/ or as per your site policies) Confined Space Entry Statement of Attainment. Both are mandatory requirements to be able to participate in this training. Following the structure of the Confined Space Entry training, you will review your knowledge of the most critical areas within the following topics, including but not limited to:

  • Explanation of What is a Confined Space, Confined Space Hazards, Unsafe Oxygen Levels and Atmospheric Hazards. Inc Effect of Irrespirable Atmospheres on the Respiratory System.
  • Work Safely and Health and Safety Rules including an understanding of Technical and Safety Information including Your Work Details, Work Method Statements, Permits, safety and emergency Response Planning
  • How to Isolate the Confined Space and select / Inspect Equipment
  • Guidelines and Tallies, Communication Equipment, Lifting and Lowering Devices, Fire Fighting Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Respiratory and Atmospheric Testing, Monitoring and Rescue equipment
  • Practical training in how to Gain Access to the Confined Space, applying relevant hazard checks before Entering the space.
  • Actually working in the confined space and
  • Exiting and returning the confined space to Service / reviewing post activity tasks

If you successfully complete this confined space entry refresher course, you will receive a certificate which indicates the Statement of Attainments as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is a nationally recognised certification. The Statement is issued by us, Harness Energy (RTO 40521).

The Confined Space ‘Statement of Attainment’ is for the Nationally Accredited Units of Competency – 

  • RIIWHS202E – Enter And Work In Confined Space

The certificate is usually needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements.

Course Prerequisites

To participate in this refresher training you are required to:

  • Provide a copy of a Risk Assessment and relevant confined space work permit that you have signed on to which is in line with this training eg undertaking a specific working task conducted in a confined space. This is required prior to the start of the course or to bring with you on the day of training. Note that if these are not viewed as suitable by the Harness Trainer, you will not be able to participate in the short refresher training course.
  • You must also have a current valid Confined Space Entry Statement of Attainment – for the current Unit of Competency. Superseded Units of Competency are not considered current. If you have an out of date Unit of Competency, it is recommended that you do the full working at heights course first.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Harness, we provide the refresher training for confined space entry. It is a half day training course but specific and relevant mandatory prerequisites in place to enable you to attend. This training has a public schedule associated.

“Re-training or refresher training should be provided as appropriate for a particular workplace. The frequency of this training should depend on how often workers are required to carry out tasks associated with entering or working in confined spaces. The Confined spaces Code of Practice is an approved code of practice under section 274 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (the WHS Act).  It applies to anyone who is a duty holder in this area.
